Green Jay Spirit on Full Display at Jackson State Cheer Camp
Jackson, TN – The Green Jay spirit was alive and thriving this past weekend as the Jackson State Community College Inaugural Cheer Club hosted its first cheer camp for local students. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., campers were split into age groups and guided through cheers tailored to their level—making the morning both fun and educational.
The camp offered young students a glimpse into the future of Green Jay cheer, while being led by the Jackson State squad. At the forefront was Cheer Captain Melanie Meza, recently honored as Freshman of the Season. When asked to describe the camp in one word, she responded without hesitation:
"Very fun. I enjoy working with kids and so do all the other Jackson State cheerleaders. Being able to show them how to have spirit and cheer on the Green Jays is very important. It shows the big community Jackson State has."
Meza's energy and leadership shined throughout the morning as she encouraged participants, led group routines, and ensured that even the youngest campers felt included.
The day ended with a showcase performance where campers proudly demonstrated their new skills for family and friends. For many, it was a memorable moment of growth and confidence. Jasmine, whose 6-year-old daughter Ansley participated, reflected:
"You can tell it helped these girls come out of their shell and be comfortable enough to express their excitement and feel included. They had some great demonstrations and training, and I think they're going to be ready for this season."
The coaching staff was equally proud of the team's performance. Assistant Coach Karen Perrin praised the cheerleaders' initiative:
"The team showed up today, and what impressed me the most is that they just hit the ground running. Even with a lot of them coming in unsure, they showcased their ability. Since this is the first team in so many years, it impresses me that they came through and just handled it. Coach Avery and I didn't have to step in because all the girls and guys took the initiative. They showed they can balance schoolwork and cheerleading, and the fact that they came here on a Saturday to support Madison County and the Jackson area makes me proud."
With energy, teamwork, and community pride on full display, the Inaugural Cheer Club proved that Green Jay spirit is alive and growing. For both the young campers and the Jackson State cheerleaders, the camp was about more than just learning cheers—it was about building tradition, confidence, and lasting community connections.
